Don’t Panic, New Adult! Here’s How to Adult Like a Boss (Even if You Don’t Know How To)
Don’t Panic, New Adult! Here’s How to Adult Like a Boss (Even if You Don’t Know How To): Let’s face it, schools are amazing at teaching you about history, maths, and maybe even Shakespeare, but when it comes to adulting, they leave you a little unprepared. You might have aced your exams and gotten your driver’s license, but can you handle a clogged toilet or decipher a bank statement?
This feeling isn’t uncommon. I recently came across a list of 100 life skills teens should know, and let’s just say, I panicked a little for my own soon-to-be-independent child. I remember learning the intricacies of bank transfer forms from my dad (back in the carbon copy days!), and yet here I am, still slightly dreading talking to the car mechanic.
The truth is, even adults don’t know everything. The good news? You don’t have to! This is where the magic of asking for help comes in.
The Superpower of Asking an adult for Help
Think of adulting like a giant video game. You just levelled up, but the instructions are missing. That’s okay! Here’s your ultimate weapon: The ability to ask for help.
Don’t be shy: Whether it’s calling a plumber or asking a coworker about a confusing form, summon your inner question-asker.
Google is your friend: The internet is a treasure trove of information. Stuck on a task? Google it!
Life Skills 101: It’s a Journey, Not a Destination
While schools might not have a dedicated “Adulting” class (yet!), you can still pick up these valuable skills along the way. Here’s how:
Embrace the learning process: It’s okay to make mistakes. That’s how we learn and grow.
Team up with your parents: They’ve been there, done that ( got the T-shirt). Ask them to teach you some of their adulting wisdom. Make sure you talk to them when they are free, not when they are in the middle of doing something. Maybe set some time aside to chat about things and maybe make a list ( I like making lists)?
Learn by doing: Dive into everyday tasks. From cooking meals to managing your finances, hands-on experience is the best teacher. Be present, offer to cook or do the washing
Money Matters: Budgeting, using a bank account, understanding credit scores.
Homeward Bound: Basic maintenance tasks, navigating bills and appointments.
Staying Healthy: Taking care of yourself physically and mentally.
Job Hunting: Crafting a CV, interviewing, and navigating the professional world.
Tech Savvy: Staying safe online and using technology effectively.
Communication Skills: The art of asking for help, expressing yourself clearly, and navigating social situations.
Remember, this is a journey, and you’re not alone. With a little curiosity, a willingness to learn, and maybe some help from mum and dad, you’ll be a full-fledged adulting pro in no time!
